More than seventy companies from the production, research and service sectors create synergies at the CHEMPARK. One third of North Rhine-Westphalia’s chemical production takes place at the Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen sites.

The CHEMPARK is well connected

From here, around 350 million consumers can be reached within a day's journey by truck. The CHEMPARK is easily accessible by waterway, railway and a dense motorway network. The international airports in Düsseldorf and Cologne-Bonn are also in the immediate vicinity.

What is a chemical park?

A chemical park is a joint production area of several chemical companies. The former “Bayerwerke” in Leverkusen, Dormagen and Krefeld-Uerdingen now form the CHEMPARK. Together we bundle our know-how, create more efficiency and more sustainability. The individual companies here often produce for their direct neighbours in a material network, which eliminates costly transport routes, for example. Waste heat utilisation

There is great potential for waste heat at the CHEMPARK. New technical developments, for example large heat pumps and more and more green electricity, are making their use increasingly economical. Therefore, waste heat utilisation will be an important component of the sustainability transformation and decarbonisation..

That is what we are doing in practice:

Digital heat register

The digital heat register is a software tool for systematically recording and visualising heat sinks and sources in CHEMPARK and deriving project ideas for sustainable heat supply. The data collected from customers is processed, fed into the CURRENTA data lake and analysed using mathematical models.

Chemical recycling

Breaking down end-of-life products into their chemical raw materials and making them fit for a second product life is possible, as Covestro shows with PU mattresses at CHEMPARK, most of which can now be chemically recycled.

Digitalisation Protection

In future, vehicle access to the CHEMPARK will be just as secure as it is today, using just an ID card. In fire protection and safety technology, the Services division is already accelerating and simplifying processes digitally, for example by recording the equipment to be tested and the test data fully electronically.

Electrode vessel

CURRENTA already generates climate-neutral steam in its electric boilers, which can be operated with green electricity. CHEMPARK is able to compensate for fluctuations in the electricity grid through its continuous demand. This is an important function for keeping the grid stable when large amounts of electricity are fed into it when there is a lot of sun and wind.

Electromobility

Chemion has been using electric delivery vehicles longer than the post office. There are now 82 charging points for the electric cars of CHEMPARK companies, powered 100% by green electricity.

Paperless laboratory

CURRENTA Analytik has digitised raw data and long-term archiving in order to meet the strict regulatory requirements of the German Medicines Act (GMP). The progressive automation of typical laboratory processes such as weighing-in with digital value transfers and electronic workflows (release and signature processes) are further milestones on the way to a lean laboratory and the conservation of resources.

Green electricity

As part of the sustainable transformation of the energy-intensive chemical industry, Currenta is also involved as an energy supplier. For example, we supply our customers with green energy products – e.g. green electricity via so-called PPA products from the market.

Hydrogen

Every CHEMPARK site already produces hydrogen that is used on site. In the future, it will be produced in a climate-neutral way, especially in sun- and wind-rich countries. In order to bring the sustainable raw material to the CHEMPARK for material, thermal and mobility applications, appropriate infrastructures must be built. CURRENTA is involved in establishing regional hydrogen platforms.

Digitalisation logistics

Das Integrierte Transport- und Ladestellenmanagement (ITLM) wird die Wartezeiten an den CHEMPARK-Standorten deutlich reduzieren. Chemion is building a digital platform for this purpose, into which all actors involved in the transport enter the relevant data and which is processed in real time. This ensures smooth processes with short waiting times for traffic and maximum transparency for the companies at the CHEMPARK.

Emissions

We want to reduce our emissions by at least 60 per cent by 2030. Coal phase-out, combined heat and power generation and electrode boilers are important building blocks for this.

As a chemical park, we are not only employer, service provider and production site: We are more. For the companies at our sites, the CHEMPARK is a materials network that enables efficient production cycles. For thousands of young people, we are trainers and launch pad for their professional future and attractive as an employer. And with the products and materials produced and developed at the CHEMPARK, we make many everyday things possible or better. We are much – and much more.

For CHEMPARK partners

Material network

In order to be able to efficiently produce basic or special chemicals from raw materials for the manufacturing industry, for example, each CHEMPARK site has its own individual material network. Covestro in Leverkusen, for example, extracts chlorine from common salt, which it uses itself for the production of raw materials for coatings, but which it also feeds into the “aromatics network” of Lanxess. By-products can often also be returned to the product cycle to produce chemicals for wastewater treatment.

Network of minds

More than 53,000 people work at all three CHEMPARK sites in offices, laboratories, production, logistics and numerous other areas. Their professional backgrounds are just as diverse as their tasks. External new and old colleagues with Bayer backgrounds combine new impulses and experience gained over decades to enable modern site operations.

Strength of the CHEMPARK

The CHEMPARK is much more than the sum of the companies located there. Thanks to the joint use of infrastructure, such as power plants, wastewater treatment plants, fiber optic networks or pipe bridges, there are numerous synergies that make the chemical industry in Germany competitive.

Specialists for many questions at the CHEMPARK

Service providers are needed to ensure that much more than just the chemistry is right and that companies at the CHEMPARK can focus on their production. As the site manager and operator, CURRENTA, together with its logistics subsidiary Chemion and maintenance provider Tectrion, has the right solution for almost any challenge. Be it through experience, know-how or simply the right contact.

For neighbours

Trainers in the region

Each year, CURRENTA trains around 2,400 young people for the companies in the Chemical Park and for itself at all three CHEMPARK sites and in Wuppertal-Elberfeld. Beyond the more than 20 scientific, technical and commercial professions, the CURRENTA portfolio includes combined training and degree programs.

Important local employer

The CHEMPARK is one of the most important employers in the Rhineland. In mid-June 2022, 34,342 people were employed in Leverkusen, 10,994 in Dormagen and 8,488 in Krefeld-Uerdingen.

The CHEMPARK generates purchasing power

Directly and indirectly, the sites increase purchasing power in the region through donations, investment projects and employees. The annual net income of all CHEMPARK employees can be put at around €1.6 billion.

Synergies with communities

In Leverkusen, CURRENTA is a partner of the Wupperverband in wastewater treatment and also treats its wastewater. At the same time, the chemical park operator is pumping drinking water for Leverkusen-Hitdorf.

Industrial Heavyweight

The three CHEMPARK sites are among the largest in the chemical industry not only in North Rhine-Westphalia but also in the whole of Germany. It is the third largest industry in Germany after the automotive and metalworking industries.

Starting point for industrial value creation

Materials that make vehicles safer and more climate-neutral, surfaces more durable or insulate buildings all come from the CHEMPARK. They are the basis for energy-saving tires, lightweight construction in cars and climate protection in construction. But new active ingredients for health and crop protection are also researched, developed and produced here.

Safety

Commitment and trust in equal measure

Safety has a very high priority. For residents who live in the vicinity of the CHEMPARK and also for the people who work here. In fact, quite a few of them belong to both groups. The CHEMPARK is committed to the safety of them all.

All plants at the CHEMPARK work according to a uniform safety concept. They have been examined and approved by the authorities. Preventive protective measures are continuously reviewed and optimised. Unfortunately, Safety can never be absolute. An event with effects on the neighborhood, too cannot be ruled out with absolute certainty. The safety concept

Ensuring the safety of neighbours, visitors and employees is a priority for the companies at the CHEMPARK. Many years of experience and the use of advanced technology help to constantly improve the level of safety. Authorities, employers’ liability insurance associations and companies work closely together on this. The employees who handle hazardous substances in the production, supply and disposal facilities and chemical storage facilities bear a special responsibility. They are informed in detail about the possible dangers when handling these substances and are intensively trained with regard to the safe operation of the facilities. To protect people and the environment, the companies of the chemical industry have joined the worldwide initiative “Responsible Care”. Among other things, „Responsible Care“ calls for the continuous improvement of safety in all areas.
